Engaging Students In and Out of the Classroom: Featuring North Kansas City School District
Wednesday, December 02, 2009 3:00 PM US Eastern
Districts today are trying to increase student engagement in order to ultimately increase student achievement. Blended learning, the teaching practice that combines teaching methods from both face-to-face and online learning, offers a model of instruction to engage students in and out of the classroom. It has proven highly effective in helping schools and districts address the challenges of student achievement, limited resources, and the expectations of 21st century learners.
Join North Kansas City School District (NKCSD) for a presentation on how the district uses online learning in the classroom and beyond to provide a personalized and connected learning experience. Using a 1-1 laptop program, every high school student participates in blended learning, where the teacher utilizes online learning during class and posts assignments and discussion questions for after the bell rings. A representative from NKCSD will also discuss how the district trains teachers and administrators using modeling to create effective blended classes.
We'll also review how Blackboard online learning solutions can help districts to enhance classroom instruction by extending their courses online for an engaging, individualized and effective learning experience.

Delivering Engaging and Relevant Professional Development: Featuring the Mississippi Department of Education
Tuesday, December 08, 2009 2:00 PM US Eastern
Teacher professional development remains a high priority, regardless of whether districts have funding for expanded teacher support. In order to improve teacher effectiveness while not raising the cost of professional development, districts are looking towards online professional development.
For the Mississippi Department of Education, putting professional development online for their new teacher training and COOL (Certification of Online Learning) programs resulted in a more student-centered experience. Unlike traditional professional development, by delivering courses online, teachers receive more than a "sit and get" experience. Teachers learn and apply concepts, discuss them with peers and refine them as they move through the program.
Join Dr. Marilyn Bowen, Online Learning Coordinator, and Dr. Leanne Long, VIP Coordinator, as they describe their use of online learning solutions to provide accessible, sustained and personalized professional learning opportunities.
We'll also explore how online learning solutions, like Blackboard software, enables institutions and districts to deliver ongoing, job-embedded and relevant professional development in a cost-effective manner.
